Dryer Vent Cleaning in Winnipeg
A full clean-out of the vent run from the dryer to the exterior exhaust, not just the lint trap you already empty yourself.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year for most Manitoba households, and sooner if clothes need more than one cycle to dry or the dryer feels hot to the touch. Bison Maintenance Services cleans the full vent run from the dryer to the exterior hood — restricted dryer vents are a recognised residential fire risk because trapped lint ignites easily.
Dryer vent cleaning gets treated as an afterthought compared to duct or furnace cleaning, but it's arguably the one with the most direct safety stakes. The lint trap inside your dryer only catches a fraction of the lint that a load of laundry produces — the rest travels down the vent line and, over time, builds up along the walls of the duct, especially at bends, transitions, and near the exterior vent hood. That buildup restricts airflow, which means your dryer runs hotter and longer to dry the same load, and lint is extremely flammable at exactly the temperatures a dryer vent reaches when airflow is restricted.
It's a bigger issue in winter. Winnipeg's cold drives exterior vent hoods to ice up or get blocked by snow more than in milder climates, compounding whatever lint restriction is already inside the line. A vent that's borderline restricted in August can be fully blocked by January, right when everyone's running the dryer more because outdoor line-drying isn't an option.
We clean the full vent run — from the dryer connection through to the exterior termination — using vent-specific brushes and vacuum extraction, not just a quick shop-vac pass at either end. For longer runs, runs with multiple bends, or setups with the dryer venting through more than one floor (common in older Winnipeg homes with a basement laundry room), we check the whole path, not just the accessible sections.

Why it matters
Clogged dryer vents are a documented residential fire risk — restricted airflow means heat has nowhere to go, and lint ignites easily. Beyond the safety angle, a blocked vent means longer dry times, higher energy bills, and more wear on your dryer's heating element and motor from working harder than it should have to. If your dryer has been taking noticeably longer to dry a normal load, or the outside of the dryer feels hot to the touch during a cycle, that's usually vent restriction, not a failing dryer.
